I have had a fairly extensive training background with trainers from a couple of gyms, but they never really trained me;  they just ‘worked me out’. David has truly taken the time to help me move better, correct my exercise patterns and help with my back. I work a labour intensive job where I am on my knees, bent over rather frequently. So it is no surprise that my back gets sore. When I first started to train with David I had a really weak core, in the sense that I did not have any control. David worked at teaching me how to use my core, so that my back fatigues less quickly and is more resilient to awkward positions.

David has helped to teach me how to lift for strength but also for longevity. I consistently make the joke that I don’t see too many men over 40 doing what we’re doing…he must be doing something right!”

At 56 years old I can honestly say I am in the best shape of my life, both physically and mentally. It goes without question that I have more energy, focus and stamina than I did when I was 25 years old.

Dave’s commitment to fitness research and science is his greatest strength, as he helped me to change poor exercise and nutrition habits that were restricting my own personal growth, on all levels. His commitment to proper form, correcting harmful exercise habits and diet helped me immensely, not to mention challenging all the internet myths and falsehoods in regards to supplements that were not helpful, in fact harmful in so many ways.

As an instructor he is respectful and patient and takes the time to understand your personal fitness goals, your potential and limitations, reviewing them on a regular basis. For your own personal safety, he constantly, without judgement will offer suggestions and corrections to your technique to avoid injury, especially to older age groups.

He is extremely helpful in providing guidance and advice when dealing with injuries and is always available to provide stretching and specific exercises to assist with recovery and preventing further injury.

As a trainer, his calm, non-judgmental approach and sense of humor simply makes training that much more enjoyable. I would highly recommend Smart Fitness to anyone.”

“David has time and time again pushed me to be a better version of myself through his fitness journey and time management in general. Since taking his coaching more seriously, I have improved drastically. I work as a chef and therefore work strange hours, he encourages me constantly to be eating properly, along with scheduling session to workout even if it’s not with him, so that I workout regularly. He’s almost more of a life coach than a personal trainer, sometimes.

When David trains me at the gym he really isolates my weaknesses and we work on them. During his initial assessment, he pointed out some things that we would be working on as a foundation to help improve my form and stability to support me later on. I’ve done quite a bit of research myself on areas I think I needed work on, but with him he could pin point what I wanted but more specifically what I needed, and was able to make me a specific workout plan very quickly. He really kept me focused on my form, bracing and breathing, which I thought of as not being important. I felt frustrated with the lack of weight at the start of his programming. He informed me, that due to my lack of strength I needed to focus on form and bracing, and then the weight would come. Since then I have been able to practice and increase my weight quicker because of the base knowledge he taught me.

David excels as a trainer because of his attention to detail and his professionalism. There’s been several times we chat in between sets only for him to cut me off, telling me to “get back at it”, or “stop talking so much and lift”! I really appreciate this, as I can get side-tracked easily. One of my favorite things about David’s coaching and teaching is that he always relates it to hockey. I play hockey recreationally 3 times a week. When I approached him the most recent time to help train me, I said I wanted to focus on getting stronger and more mobile for hockey. With that, he was able to create workout plans for me to become a better player. He explains how each exercise relates to the game, not as a mimic of it, but rather as a supplement for something on the ice.”
